The SBPA is an all volunteer, non-profit organization. We need volunteers who are sincerely interested in helping animals and who are able to make a commitment to volunteer a minimum of three to four hours per month, for at least six months per year, especially the summer months. However if you will be in town for only a short time and would like to help, please let us know when you are available and we will try to accommodate your schedule. Jump to the Application Form.
The following is a sample list of some of the ways you can help. Please consider the number of hours you can provide each month.

*Animal Socializer
Spend time petting, brushing and playing with the “shy” animals, to help socialize them and make them better candidates for adoption.
Time commitment; minimum two to three hours per week.
Experience requirements; none
Adoption Coordinator
Help match our available animals with potential adopters, in order to provide the animal with their new forever home.
Time Commitment; minimum of one three hour shift per month
Experience requirement; SBPA will provide training
Adoption follow-up
Contact new adoptive “parents” for an update on the animal and provide any help or information that might be needed to assure a smooth transition to the new family member.
Time commitment; Three to four hours per month.
Experience requirement; SBPA will provide training and guidance.
*Community Education
Speak at fundraising and other community events about the SBPA, the humane treatment of animals and the need to spay/neuter all pets.
Time Commitment; Varies, two to three hours per month.
Experience requirements; none. Public speaking or educational background is helpful.
**Childhood Education
Speak to elementary level school children on the proper care and feeding of animals stressing the need for spay/neuter of all pets. Age appropriate materials will be provided.
Time commitment; Varies two to three hours per month.
Experience requirements; Fluency in Spanish, Public speaking or educational background helpful.
Feral colony feeder/maintenance
Clean, feed and water at a designated feral cat or dog colony.
Training; on site training will be provided by an SBPA volunteer.
Time commitment; one to two hours once a week.
Foster home
Provide temporary haven for homeless animals that need support, socializing and love
Training; Home visit, ongoing resources provided by SBPA
Time commitment; Varies
Fundraising/special events
Help in planning and participate in our various fundraisers and special events, such as book and calendar sales, bake sales, chili cook off, fashion shows and off site adoption events, etc.
Training; Orientation, monthly meetings, training specific to event.

Maintenance Assistant- Safe program
Clean and replenish litter boxes and food/ water dishes. Provide general yard clean-up in the dog area. Administer medication as necessary.
Training; on site training
Time commitment; 2 hour shift (no minimum or maximum number of shifts required, see shift sign-up sheet)
Maintenance Assistant -Cat Santuario
Clean and replenish litter boxes and food/water dishes. Provide general cleaning in the kitten/elderly cat apartment. Exercise, play and hands on care to cats, help administer general mediation when necessary.
Training; on site orientation and training.
Time commitment; 3 hour shift. (No minimum or maximum number of shifts required, see program coordinator for sign-ups.
Grant writing
Research new opportunities for grants, write and submit existing grants.
Training; Monthly meetings as necessary, requires experienced grant writers.
Time commitment; Varies
General Assistant
Prepare and transport animals to local off site adoption events, bathing, brushing and caring for the animals through out the event.
Training; orientation and training provided
Time commitment; Varies, two or three hours per month.
*Handyman
Provide on site minor repair to animal facilities. Plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs including general maintenance.
Training; Must have own tools and general maintenance skills. Materials provided by SBPA.
Time commitment; at least 3 hours per month.
*Newsletter creation
Help write articles, plan layouts, take photos and publish a quarterly newsletter titled “Against all odds”
For the SBPA. The newsletter will emphasize the plight of the animals and request donations to help them.
Training; none, previous newsletter publishing experience is helpful.
Time commitment; twice monthly meetings of 2 to 3 hours as necessary.
Newsletter Distribution
Compile data for address labels and prepare newsletters for delivery locally and in the U.S.
Training; orientation, on site training.
Time commitment; 3 hours per month
**Trapper
Trap feral animals in need of spay/neuter to be returned to their colonies and to rescue animals in dire need.
Training; orientation and training specific to duties
Time commitment; varies as needed
Transporter
Transports animals to vet. Appointments or to off site adoption events.
Training; none
Time commitment; Approximately 2 to 3 hours per week.
Thank you card writer
Help us thank our supporters by sending them notes of our appreciation.
Training; Orientation and specific training for duties, materials provided.
Time Commitment; Once a week, approximately one to two hours.
Spay/neuter clinic
Assist visiting vets and vet techs with animals at the clinics, duties to include, help in admitting, post surgery car, transporting of animals and other duties as needed.
Training; orientation, on site training.
Time commitment; varies with clinic schedule. 5 to 6 hours per month.
Animal health care provider
Review and inspect animals for general health, help with minor care and medications. Requires vet. Tech. or equivalent experience.
Training; Orientation, tour of facility, review of animals and health issues.
Time Commitment; 4 hour shift weekly
