SAFE: Sponsor, Adopt, Foster, Educate
SBPA's answer to San Carlos' need for an animal shelter, the SAFE Program recruits caring people to foster animals and provide them food until they can find forever homes.
SBPA does NOT run an animal shelter. We are in desperate need of foster parents and privately-owned locations to shelter animals. Please read on to see how you can help.
Goals of the SAFE Program
SBPA instituted the SAFE Program to benefit animals in crisis by providing...
- Sponsors...individuals who donate one bag of food per month for a specific dog or cat in the program.
- Adoption...suitable homes for needy animals. It's really easy to adopt a pet through the SBPA. These animals have already been vaccinated and spayed or neutered; all they need are homes. They also have their health certificates and are ready to cross the border to the US!
- Fostering...support for animals awaiting permanent homes. Fostered animals waiting for adoption need security, protection from the elements and food. SAFE Program volunteers provide care for pets abandoned on the streets of our community. Volunteers humanely trap and transport abandoned and feral animals as well as provide them safe living conditions.
- Education...spreading the word about SBPA and animal rights. SBPA sponsors an on-going education program to inform the public about responsible pet ownership. In addition, our newsletter, "Against All Odds," is published and distributed in the San Carlos region to keep our activities in the public eye.
SBPA does not operate an animal shelter. Care and feeding of the animals admitted to the SAFE Program are accomplished totally by volunteers employing charitable contributions.

Eligibility for an animal to be admitted into the SAFE Program will be decided by the director of the program, along with the help of program assistants. Circumstances warranting an animal's acceptance into the program include:
- A government agent (ie: Comisaria) requests care for an animal in need;
- An owner passes away and leaves an animal with nowhere to go, or the orphaned animal needs care until the next-of-kin assumes responsibility;
- An animal is obviously abandoned and wandering the streets, presenting a danger to itself; or
- An animal is caught up in special circumstances.
If you are caring for a stray or homeless dog or cat, we can help advertise it for adoption through our website. The animal must stay in your possession as we do not have a shelter. If you find an animal that you feel would benefit by being in the SAFE Program (it must be healthy and and adoptable) you can apply to SBPA. The SAFE Program can service only five dogs and five cats at one time.
Once an animal in the SAFE Program is adopted out, that space is open for a new animal. While we are searching for a permanent home for the animal you've entered into the program, you will be expected to help with the care and feeding of the animal.

Special Notice
The SAFE Program is not accepting any animals at the present time (October, 2007). We are looking for a new location for the continuation of our program. If you know of a site that might be acceptable for the temporary housing of a limited number of animals, please call the SAFE Program Director.
If you have animals that you are caring for, remember we have free spay/neuter certificates available.
Please do not ask the SBPA volunteers to care for these abandoned animals as many of our people are already on overload with dropoffs from the summer. This is an expensive proposition as they provide the feeding at their own expense.
Remember, we will try to help you adopt out your animal, but the animal must stay with you as we do not have a location, the resources or the volunteers to care for them at this time.

Metas de Programa de 'SAFE'
SBPA instituyo el programa 'SAFE' para beneficiar a animales en crisis, proporcionando:
- Personas que donan una bolsa de alimento al mes para un perro o gato especifico del programa.
- Hogares para los animales que lo necesitan. Es realmente facil adoptar un perro o gato de SBPA. Estos animales ya estan operados y vacunados, lo unico que necesitan es un hogar donde vivir. Tambien cuentan con un certificado que les permite cruzar la frontera de Estados Unidos.
- Dar hospedaje a los perros o gatos mientras encuentran un hogar permanente, ellos necesitan proteccion y alimento. Las personas voluntarias que participan en este programa atrapan a los animales callejeros y se los llevan a sus casas.
- Educar sobre los derechos de los perros y gatos, es decir, de como dar un cuidado adecuado para los animales en adopcion.
SBPA no es un albergue. Los animales del programa 'SAFE' son atrapados y cuidados por voluntarios.

La directiva del programa, junto con la ayuda de las ayudantes del programa, deciden que animales son elegibles para el programa "SAFE". Las circunstancias que autorizan a un perro o gato entrar al programa son:
- Que un agente de la Comisaria solicite el cuidado de un animal;
- Que el dueno de un o unos animales se muera, el programa 'SAFE' cuida al o los animales mientras algun pariente del desaparecido toma su responsabilidad como nuevo dueno;
- Que un animal callejero este herido; o
- Que un animal sea atrapado en circunstancias especiales.
Si usted tiene un perro o gato que necesite un nuevo
hogar por favor comuniquese con SBPA. Para que un animal sea aceptado debera estar sano y debe
permanecer con usted hasta que SBPA encuentre un nuevo hogar. Una vez que sea aceptado, SBPA publicara su
informacion en nuestra pagina de Internet.
Desafortunadamente, debido a las restricciones de espacio y financiamiento, el programa "seguro" solo puede albergar a cinco perros y cinco gatos al mismo tiempo.
